Get to Know Interior Paint Sheens

Even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush, you’re likely familiar with terms like “flat,” “eggshell,” and “high-gloss”; knowing what sets them apart from one another is something entirely different. Higher sheens are more durable but also show imperfections more prominently. This means that flat and high-gloss paint should be used with care, and defaulting to one of the sheens in the middle is usually your best bet.

  • Flat - This sheen doesn’t reflect any light, making it perfect for concealing minor flaws. Flat paint is also more forgiving of painting mishaps, like lap marks. The downside to this finish is that burnishing is likely with frequent cleaning, so it’s best for low-traffic areas of your home. What is burnishing? It’s an area that has more shine than its surroundings due to being rubbed.
  • Matte - Matte paint is a step up from flat in sheen but still has minimal reflectivity. It creates a luxurious finish that is the perfect accent for formal dining rooms and bedrooms. Matte paint can withstand more cleaning and can be used in areas with moderate traffic.
  • Eggshell - Arguably one of the most popular sheens, eggshell is the perfect middle ground between flat and glossy. Eggshell has a soft luster like its namesake and gives every color a subtle glow.
  • Satin - Satin paint is often confused with eggshell paint because of the marked similarities between the two finishes. A satin finish is slightly more glossy than eggshell and offers enhanced stain resistance and durability. This sheen has an eye-catching luster, making it a fantastic choice for highlighting interesting architectural details and trim.
  • Semi-Gloss - Consider semi-gloss paint if you’re repainting your kitchen cabinetry. A semi-gloss finish is elegant and attractive while offering a hard, furniture-like finish that makes it great for higher traffic uses, like trim and cabinetry.
  • High Gloss - High gloss paint is durable, easy to clean, and delivers one of the most luxurious finishes of all Benjamin Moore interior paint. The caveat to this fantastic finish is that it is very unforgiving of mishaps and imperfections. For this reason, we suggest leaving jobs with a high gloss finish to professional painters.

Regal® Select Interior Paint

The Regal® Select Interior Paint line has been one of the industry’s most trusted interior paints for more than 50 years. When colorant is added to paint, chemicals are also added to ensure proper mixing; this process can degrade the pigment and affect the finish’s durability. Benjamin Moore solved that problem with Gennex Color Technology. Gennex Color Technology uses colorants designed specifically for Benjamin Moore paint colors to give you the deepest, most authentic color in every sheen. Regal® Select Interior Paint is available in five finishes, with three having zero VOC:
